Bioshock Part II
Unfortunately, my friends at the Coffee Merchant have been subjected to my enthusiastic tirades on Bioshock. It is the most satisfying game that I have ever played. I honestly have no negatives about the game. Everytime a twist occurred, I would think that I should have seen it coming. With every recording played, every system hacked, every Big Daddy fight, every Little Sister freed or harvested, and eventually the ending, the game elicited an emotional response. It has been a long time since I was able to so totally lose myself in such an experience. I simply can’t help but marvel at the level of detail put into building such a world as Rapture. I can not help but hope that I get to return to Rapture in a sequel at some point; perhaps in a prequel to the events set forth in such a “Utopia” gone so wrong. I have never, in 30 plus years of gaming, finished a game and immediately started it over again. I have to agree with one review that I read just before it was released — this game could have lasted 100 hours and it simply would have been too short.
If some game developer, writer, or entertainment creator should stumble upon my little blog here, I ask that you look to this game as an example of how to make a compelling adult-oriented video game. Violence with a reason. Moral choices. Swearing when it was appropriate. Connection with your characters. Compelling and believable voice performances. One last thing, give me a bad guy that I despise. In an action game, make me want him to get what he so deservedly has coming.
Give me a game, but tell me a story. No, make me live the story. At the end, I left a small piece of me in the game; guess I need to go looking for it. Good night.
