I recently started watching or listening to some of the lectures from iTunesU.  I came across this wonderful, wonderful lecture by Randy Pausch called Time Management.  Everyone should check out this free nugget of wisdom packed into 1 hour and 15 minutes.  Really.

Quick and dirty post.  First, we have moved all of the sites to a new Dell that Kevin and I purchased this summer.  We now have more control over the processing power of the server.  Secondly, I have moved the sidebars on the right around a bit.  You may see a new section called Interesting Web Stories. Those links are actually power by my Google Reader account!  I can now read something in my website subscriptions and share it with the public at large.

Now that I have cleared pending moonlighting projects and moved the services, perhaps I can get back to posting a bit more?  We’ll see.

We have moved to New York City!  Ok, sorta.  I have gone in with a colleague on a server that is housed in New York City on lylix.net. Why not webslingerz? One, I wanted to keep this a bit separate from webslingerz since it tends to play in a larger enterprise arena and two, I really prefer not to use company resources for moonlighting projects.

Jeffrey has typically been OK with this so long as you are straight forward about your efforts and don’t impact performance (my work or the servers’), but in this case, keeping things separate is just good policy.

Generally, speaking, I also avoid virtual hosting services after a really, really bad experience with one mailing my credit card information to me unencrypted. They were dropped immediately, but the pain didn’t end there.

Kevin has had a good experience with this company over the last few months, so we bumped up the memory in this server and moved forward with it. Thanks Kevin!

Also, big thanks to Randy Arp at Stiffler Engineering for allowing me to host my server at his location in Foley for the last year(?). Thanks Randy!

It is Saturday night, 1 minute to midnight.  What am I doing?  Trying to figure out the best way to back up VMWare virtual machines without creating a lot of downtime.  I need a life.  Could someone loan me one of theirs?  Thanks.  Update:  I figured it out.  Yay.  Tested this to o’dark’thirty the next night.

One more thing…

After staying at a another hotel where it wants to overcharge for less than 12 hours of Internet usage, I want to tell any Baldwin County resident east of Fish river to be grateful for Gulftel’s liberal usage policies. When you drive down 59 and see all of the hotels, restaurants, coffee shops, and municipalities providing wireless for free. Feel damned spoiled.

After spending two months on the phone with a large cable company fourteen hours north of here almost every other day because they could not provide a stable connection to an office I work for…well, when you get your bill for a connection up to 6 Mbps, be thankful for the speed and support you get here.

Finally. Please. And this is for every single Internet provider you have now or will every have. If you do have problems, call their technical support. Follow the chain of support. Give them a fair chance to fix your issue. All this “geek” stuff isn’t simple and the solution can be elusive at times.

For my local provider at almost all of the places I hobo at regularly, thanks to the owners that provide the service and thanks Gulftel.
